About The Cardiff Cycling Campaign

Keeping Cardiff Moving?

CCC Logo According to Cardiff Council's own web site, "Our vision is for a world class and integrated transport system that offers safe, efficient and sustainable travel for all, and where public transport, walking and cycling provide real and desirable alternatives to car travel.". This is an admirable vision, but its execution is flawed.

They state that "Cardiff is becoming an increasingly cycle-friendly city with 80km of cycle routes".

We disagree:

  • Some of these cycle routes are no more than lines on the map, with nothing but blue "cycling permitted" signs to show that bikes are indeed allowed on the road.
  • The Western Cycling Corridor, never completed, is now to be ripped out in order to provide more car parking in the new controlled parking zone.
  • Cyclists are banned from the Cogan Spur for the next 18 months and now also banned permanently from the A470 north of Cardiff.
  • The St Davids 2 devlopment is closing the only safe cycle route through the city centre.
  • The proposed traffic ban on St Mary St at weekends will also include bikes, causing a huge diversion just to get across town.
It seems that where new developments are concerned, Cardiff County Council tend to deem cyclists an afterthought - and sometimes not even that! In spite of all their fine words, Cardiff is less cycle-friendly than ever, and the erosion of cycle facilites continues apace.

If you want to do something about this state of affairs, then join us.

History

Cardiff Cycling Campaign originated in discussions around Friends of the Earth and others, during 1987 and 1988. At one time it was a "Cycle Planning Group", at another time it was "Friends of the Bike". The first campaign event (a bike ride around the city and Cardiff Bay) was in September 1987.

The first newsletter was published in 1989.
